More than 90% of levies providing funding for parks and recreation agencies passed last night in voting around Ohio. In all, 43 of 47 parks and recreation specific levies were successful.
“We are beyond ecstatic,” said Woody Woodward, Executive Director of the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association. “Overall, it’s one of the best election nights for parks and recreation that we have ever seen in Ohio. We say, every day, that parks and recreation changes lives. Ohio voters clearly understand that and value it.”
Woodward said the night was led by seven county park districts in Ashland, Geauga, Hamilton, Lake, Medina, Muskingum, and Senaca Counties. He made note of the outcome for Great Parks of Hamilton County, where more than 74% of voters approved the park district levy.
The lone county park district which was unsuccessful was in Clark County, a result that Woodward said cost him sleep Tuesday night. “We’re stunned by the Clark County vote. That agency is doing amazing work in a community that really benefits from the services they provide. It’s hard to understand.”
Woodward said the current political environment caused trepidation in some areas. “We keep hearing that property taxes are a huge issue. And that may be. But here’s the thing: voters in every corner of this state proved once again last night that they are willing to invest their property tax dollars in things that make a difference in their lives. They clearly believe that parks and recreation is worth the investment. All the noise about property tax doesn’t change that.”
